One thing I see online alot lately in places like Tumblr and on Youtube is that you have people from the Gender queer community and Transgender community who think that being born with an Intersex condition and a DSD condition is a sexual identity or gender identity. What I am finding alot online is that you have some of the most misguided and confused transsexuals and gender queer people who are equating intersex with being a sexual identity or a gender identity. What they are doing in reality is erasing, the history, life experience and up bringing of Intersex people and DSD people. By them calling intersex a sexual identity or a gender identity, they are in effect erasing intersex people, in the same fashion that Medical science tries to erase Intersex people.
What irritates me the most as an Intersex person is when I see Trans and gender queer people trying to equate being born intersex as if it’s a sexual identity or a gender Identity. I have seen some online who think that being born intersex is a sexual identity that anyone can claim or being a gender identity that anyone can chose. Some have sexualize what it means to be born Intersex and even fetishize what it means to be biologically born intersex. I have even seen some make outlandish claims of being intersex or claiming to have an intersex identity without ever being diagnosed of having an actual intersex condition by a medical doctor.
What is happening is that you have Transgender people and gender queer people who are erasing intersex people, their lived experience and upbringing. They are sexualizing what it means to be born intersex. Even calling intersex a sexual identity or gender identity. I have even seen words used by trans and gender queer people such “intersexual” or “intersexuality”. Which to me is offensive and derogatory towards Intersex people. What Trans and gender queer people are doing by calling intersex people “intersexual”, they poking fun of the plight of Intersex people and their medical condition. They are also erasing intersex people, their identity and their life experience.
Which as an Intersex/DSD person, I am very offended, when anyone thinks that being born with an Intersex condition amounts to being a sexual identity or gender identity. It is offensive to me and very hateful and derogatory toward any biological born intersex person. Seeing people online thinking that being intersex is a gender identity or sexual orientation is very offensive and very hateful. I am offended when anyone online thinks being born with an intersex condition equates to having a sexual identity or gender identity.
In reality, being born Intersex/DSD is not a sexual orientation and is not a Gender Identity. It’s a medical condition such as Autism or Down syndrome or even diabetes. You don’t sexualize Autism or Down syndrome people. So why would anyone would want to sexualize being born intersex? It’s sexist and very offensive towards Intersex people and even myself as a biological born intersex person. So as a biological born intersex person, I am offended when anyone including Trans and gender queer people who sexualize or fetishize intersex people. It’s hateful and it erases what it means to be born intersex.
